Juror Reporting Instructions for Petit (Trial) Jurors Generally, you are summoned for a one-week term, although you may be required to serve on a trial extending beyond the first week. To determine your daily obligation, you must call 845-486-2692 anytime the weekend before the term date, and then after 5:00pm each evening thru and including Thursday of that week. A recorded message will identify by ID# those jurors who must be available (the ID# is provided on your summons). Your instructions will depend on the status that YOU select, either: IN ATTENDANCE STATUS When instructed by the recorded message, you report at a specified time to the Central Jury Room, or ONE-HOUR STANDBY STATUS When instructed by the recorded message, you are available at home or work to report within one hour of receiving a phone call from our office. All jurors, both IN ATTENDANCE and ONE-HOUR STANDBY, must call the recorded message each evening, and if your ID# in NOT on the message, then you have no obligation for the next day, but you must continue calling each evening thru Thursday. Please remember to follow the instructions to detach and return a portion of your summons. Otherwise, we will not know that you are available, and you may not receive credit for service. The normal jury obligation is for ONE DAY/ONE TRIAL during the one-week term, although this may vary due to court requirements. Generally, jurors who elect the ONE-HOUR STANDBY status will be instructed by the recorded message to be available two or three days, and will be called to report on one of those days (jurors who have not been called to report by early afternoon may call 486-2692 to determine if they must still be available). Jurors who elect the IN ATTENDANCE status must report as instructed by the recorded message (the message will specify the time if instructing you to report). The Courts are in session from 9am to 5pm Monday thru Friday. Upon the completion of your service, you will be disqualified from further service in the State courts for four years. If you attend more than ten days, then you will be disqualified for eight years. REQUEST FOR POSTPONEMENT - Our policy is to grant ONE postponement to any week within the next twelve months which is at least four weeks after the date of the summons. We will mail another summons three weeks prior to the date specified. A request for an excuse or postponement must be made upon the receipt of your summons, and should include appropriate documentation and your phone number(s). We will contact you if your request is denied. Excused jurors do not receive credit for service, and they may be rescheduled to a future jury term. |
