The NYS Unified Court System, Fifth Judicial District is honored to celebrate women of every race, class, and ethnic background who have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of our Judicial System and the Nation in countless recorded and unrecorded ways. Women have played and continue to play a critical economic, cultural, and social role in every sphere of the life of the Nation by constituting a significant portion of the labor force working inside and outside of the home. Despite these contributions, the role of women in history has been all too often undervalued in the literature, teaching and study of history.

What is National Women's History Month?

Every March, our country celebrates the accomplishments of women throughout history. Even though these accomplishments go back through time, history books, until recently, failed to acknowledge women as pioneers or historical contributors. Today, most colleges offer classes in women's history and most schools teach kids about the many contributions women have made throughout history. How did this shift come about?

On March 19, 1911, a German woman named Klara Zetkin organized the very first International Women's Day. Interest in International Women's Day was pretty low until the 1960s, when the women's movement caused women to wonder why they weren't included in the history books! In 1978, a California school district started Women's History Week to promote the teaching of women's history. It was so popular that in 1981, Congress passed a resolution making the week a celebration for the entire country! In 1987, a group of women campaigned with representatives from museums, schools and libraries to expand the celebration, and Congress responded by declaring the entire Month of March National Women's History Month that very same year!
