Presiding Justice Henry J. Scudder
Henry J. Scudder
received his law degree from the University of Tennessee in 1969. He was
admitted in 1970 and began his career practicing law in Bath, New York. Between
1972 and 1979, he served as an Assistant District Attorney and then as First
Assistant District Attorney in Steuben County. Between 1982 and 1996, he served
as a Judge of the Surrogate’s Court in Steuben County and also presided in
Supreme, County and Family Court. He was elected a Justice of the Supreme Court
in the Seventh Judicial District in 1996. He was designated as an Associate
Justice to the Appellate Division, Fourth Department in 1999. Justice Scudder
currently serves as a Liaison to the Lawyers’ Fund for Client Protection. He is
a member of the Steuben County Bar Association, the New York State Bar
Association; Past President and Executive Committee Member of the New York State
Surrogates' Association; Member of the New York State EPTL-SPCA Committee in
reviewing and recommending amendments pertaining to the Estates, Powers and
Trust Law and the Surrogate's Court Procedure Act; the New York State Supreme
Court Justices Association, the Association of Supreme Court Justices of the
Seventh Judicial District, the Steuben County Agricultural Society, the Women’s
Center of the Southern Tier and the BPO Elks, USA.
On November 17, 2006, Governor Pataki appointed Justice
Scudder to be Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division, Fourth Department.
