Judge Gazzillo holds an Associate Degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice (1974), a Baccalaureate from Pace University (1978) and is a 1982 graduate of New York Law School ( Magna Cum Laude) where he served as a Research Editor of the Law Review. In 1993 he was appointed to fill an unexpired term as a Judge of the Suffolk County District Court; the following November he was elected to a full term. In 1996 he was elected to the County Court. Soon after his elevation to the County Court bench, he served as an Acting Supreme Court Justice and presided over matrimonial and related cases. In 1999, he transferred to the criminal court, predominantly presiding over narcotics and white collar indictments. Since 2000 he has served as the Supervising Judge of the Criminal Courts, Suffolk County.
Before his judicial career, he held various positions in the private as well as the public sectors. After law school, and a stint in private practice in Staten Island, he moved to Suffolk County where he served as an Assistant District Attorney in the District Court Bureau and thereafter in the Rackets Bureau. In addition to other experience with a number of private, Suffolk County firms, he has served as law secretary to the Hon. Richard C. Delin, County Court, Nassau County, the Hon. H. Patrick Leis, III, then Acting J.S.C. Suffolk County, the Hon. Denis R. Hurley, then Judge, Suffolk County Court, as well as the Hon. A. Gail Prudenti, J.S.C.
Judge Gazzillo is a Director of the Suffolk County Columbian Lawyers Association and was their 1997 Judge of the Year. In 2001, the Suffolk County Criminal Bar Association named him Judge of the Year. He has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Alexander Hamilton Inn of the American Inns of the Court since 1996. Also, he has served as a member of the Site/Design Committee of the Suffolk County Vietnam Veterans Memorial from 1985 to its 1991 completion. A retired New York City Police Sergeant, he is also a member of various retired police fraternal associations. He has been an instructor at New York Institute of Technology and since 1994 has been an Adjunct Professor at Dowling College.
