Hon. Sylvia Hinds-Radix

Justice Sylvia Hinds-Radix currently holds the position of Administrative Judge for Civil Matters in the Second Judicial District. In this role, she oversees both the New York State Supreme Court, Civil Term and the New York City Civil Court. Justice Hinds-Radix was elected to the Supreme Court, Kings County, in November of 2004 for a fourteen-year term. Prior to her election, Justice Hinds-Radix served as a New York City Civil Court Judge, spending her first year in the Criminal Court of Kings County. Prior to her election to the Civil Court bench, then Attorney Sylvia Hinds-Radix used the law to improve the quality of life of thousands of people in New York City.

In 1985, soon after graduating from Howard University School of Law, Justice Hinds-Radix joined the legal staff of District Council 37 Municipal Employees Legal Services. As an attorney at DC 37, she specialized in the areas of Landlord & Tenant, Bankruptcy, Consumer Litigation and Immigration Law. She also sat as a member of the District Council 37 Housing Committee and conducted seminars on Landlord & Tenant rights and obligations. She was the Supervising Attorney of the Landlord & Tenant Division and was very instrumental in the formation and success of the Affordable Mortgage Program.

Justice Hinds-Radix is very active in her community and as a practitioner was a staunch supporter and advocate of immigrants’ rights. In 1996, she was instrumental in the development and implementation of District Council 37's Immigration Program and was later appointed Chief Counsel of the program, a position she held until she left to go to the Civil Court. As a result of her expert and dedicated leadership, the program became a phenomenal success . As Chief Counsel, she and her legal staff provided legal representation to the Council’s 125,000 members on a wide range of immigration issues. Her passion for the rights of immigrants motivated her to conduct seminars and assist in the completion of citizenship applications at churches and civic organizations.

Justice Hinds-Radix is the recipient of many awards, including The Gold Crown of Merit which was conferred upon her by the Governor General of Barbados on that nation’s celebration of its 39th anniversary of its independence, one of the nation’s highest honors. She is also the recipient of the Brooklyn Borough President’s Shirley Chisholm Leadership Award and the East Flatbush Friends of Education Inc.’s Thurgood Marshall Freedom Award, as well as, the Golda Meir Award bestowed upon Justice Hinds-Radix by the Jewish Lawyers Guild.

In addition to her current professional responsibilities, Justice Hinds-Radix is a member of several organizations including the New York State Association of Supreme Court Justices, the New York State Bar Association, the New York Criminal Bar Association, the New York Lawyers Association, the National Association of Women Judges, and the Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Inc. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association and has participated in Judicial workshops at the Judicial Institute. She is also a Master in the American Inns of Court and a member of the Board of Directors for the St. Gabriel’s Senior Citizens Center.

Justice Hinds-Radix earned her Bachelors of Science Degree from the University of Massachusetts and her Master's Degree in Political Science from Long Island University. In 1984, she received her Jurist Doctorate Degree from Howard University School of Law. In addition to being admitted to practice law in the State of New York, she is also admitted to the United States Federal Court: Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.

Justice Hinds-Radix is married to Dr. Joseph Radix and they are the proud parents of three children.
