Police Department

Domestic Violence & Elder Abuse Section

The Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse Section of the Suffolk County Police Department is responsible for coordinating police activities related to Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse issues. Police officers are available to answer questions from the community and outside agencies related to police procedures and policies.

Police officers from the unit conduct visits in the community to victims of violence. The officers conduct danger assessments and provide information to victims on domestic violence, police procedures, the effect on children witnessing violence and safety planning. These visits are usually made with an advocate from a Domestic Violence Agency in order to provide victims with as much assistance as possible.

The Domestic Violence/Elder Abuse Section acts as a liaison between the police department and other private governmental agencies. Officers review all Domestic Incident Reports and make referrals to Domestic Violence and Social Service agencies regarding these incidents.

In addition, officers conduct joint visits with the Department of Social Service/Adult Protective Services on cases where an elderly person may be a victim of a crime.

Services provided by the Domestic Violence/Elder Abuse Section also include presentations to various community groups on topics such as dating violence, personal safety, elder abuse, and financial exploitation.
