On April 17, 2009, the Brooklyn Treatment Court, in collaboration with Samaritan Village, Inc. (Samaritan), the Nassau County Treatment Court, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and the New York Association of Drug Treatment Court Professionals, presented the innovative conference “A Pledge to Healing: A Multi-System Approach to Treating Chemically Dependent Veterans.” The conference featured knowledgeable presenters and hosted over 400 attendees, including judges, substance abuse and mental health treatment professionals, drug court staff, attorneys, students, and other criminal justice professionals. It was designed to: provide attendees with an overview of the challenges and issues with which returning veterans are confronted; give attendees the opportunity to hear real life experiences and struggles of veterans who are currently in treatment; and help attendees to discuss and identify effective treatment approaches in working with returning veterans, to learn about the Veterans Treatment Court and its approach to treatment, to become familiar with intergovernmental collaborations created to meet the needs of veterans and their families, and to learn about the new services that are being created for returning vets.
