Supreme Court - 11th JD Queens
Civil Commitments / Mental Hygiene

Mental Hygiene
360 Adams Street, Room 479A
Brooklyn, NY 11201
(347) 296-1262

The Mental Hygiene Court is where people petition to have a person brought before a judge to determine if they need psychiatric help. These matters are adjudged based on the criteria of whether the person is a danger to themselves or to others.

In addition, the Mental Hygiene Court also handles "Kendra's Law" cases. These matters concern individuals who have a prior history of mental illness, are 18 years of age or older and have demonstrated their inability to safely remain in the community without supervision. The relief granted by the court is to have these individuals placed on a form of civil probation.
