| Welcome
to jury service within the New York State Unified Courts Third
Judicial District. Jury service plays an essential role in our
system of justice. The Constitutions of the United States and
the State of New York guarantee to us the right to trial by
jury when certain legal interests or liberties are at stake.
These laws also provide that a collective body of "eligible"
citizens shall perform as jurors, regardless of race, ethnicity,
gender or economic status.
It requires no special
skills or legal knowledge, but only that you be honest, impartial,
and willing to keep an open mind. It is a role you should assume
with pride.
We recognize that
jury service sometimes requires sacrifices and may interrupt
your personal and business lives. Yet serving as a juror is
an important civic responsibility, but also an opportunity to
actively participate in the american justice system and see
the courts in action.
We have designed this website for
jurors, employers, and the general public to help educate as
well as provide information that will increase public awareness
of the valuable role that both grand and petit (trial) jurors
play in our democratic system of government.
This website if for
you, and we hope that you find the resources and information
contained herein, useful and helpful. If you have comments or
suggestions, please visit the Contact
Us page.
