5th Judicial District

Celebrating

Black history month logo

First initiated by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926, as a week-long observance, today we celebrate February as Black History Month. The NYS Unified Court System Fifth Judicial District is honored to recognize the important contributions of African-Americans throughout our nation’s history and to celebrate the diversity that built our great state and nation.

From Civil Rights Leader and humanitarian Martin Luther King, Jr., to scientist and educator George Washington Carver, to astronaut Dr. Guion Stewart Bluford, Jr., to Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall, and activist Harriet Tubman, African-American men and women have been at the forefront of progress and accomplishment since the birth of our nation. They are not just heroes of the African-American community, but they epitomize what it means to be an American. They displayed incredible courage, strength, and determination in the face of great adversity and used it to propel themselves and this nation to greatness.

The brave efforts of African-Americans have made a profound and lasting impact on the culture and history of this country. Our legal system has made great strides in promoting equal rights, fairness and justice for all people, however, we must continue to work together to completely eradicate all forms of inequality and discrimination.

We join with all Americans in celebrating Black History Month, our diverse heritage and culture, and continuing our efforts to create a community that is more just, peaceful, and prosperous for all.
