Pro Bono Opportunities
The types of legal services to be provided through the Project are broad; however, referrals will be made only for non-criminal cases which do not generate fees. Eligible clientele must meet federally established income guidelines. All clients and cases will be screened for eligibility and potential merit.
The range of legal services to be provided includes but is not limited to the following:
□ Article 81 Guardianship
□ Bankruptcy
□ Child Support
□ Collection Defense
□ Consumer / Contracts
□ Divorce
□ Eviction Defense
□ Foreclosure Defense
□ Guardianship
□ Health Care Proxy
□ Immigration
□ Income Tax
|
□ Medicaid
□ Non-Parent Custody Petitions
□ Public Benefits
□ Real Property
□ Rights of the Disabled
□ Rights of the Elderly
□ Small Estates
□ Special Education
□ SSI
□ Torts (Defense Only)
□ Unemployment Insurance
□ Wills/Power of Attorney |
Every effort will be made to tailor procedures to suit the needs of volunteers and referrals will be made in a manner designed to avoid undue disruption of a volunteer attorney's schedule. After the case has been screened and accepted for a referral, a member of the pro bono program serving the county in which the client resides will:
- Refer the case to an attorney based on his or her expressed interests.
- Select the case and its timing to meet the attorney’s schedule and other time commitments.
- Discuss the case with the attorney before he or she decides to accept it.
If you are interested in taking a case in an area of law you do not normally practice in order to gain experience in a new practice area, please contact Amanda Warner at (716) 847-0662, ext. 318 or awarner@wnylc.com to discuss training opportunities and potential mentoring options through the Pro Bono Committee.
