Biography of Justice Sylvia G. Ash

Justice Ash JUSTICE SYLVIA G. ASH received her J.D. from Howard University School of Law. Upon graduation, Justice Ash served as a judicial law clerk in New Jersey Superior Court, Atlantic County.  Thereafter, she joined the legal department of District Council 37 Municipal Employees Legal Services Plan where she worked as a Supervising Attorney in the Family Law and Administrative Law units, and as Chief Counsel of the Immigration/Citizenship Program. Justice Ash was elected to the Kings County Civil Court in 2005. In 2010, Justice Ash was elected to the Kings County Supreme Court.  Previously, Justice Ash was assigned to the City and regular IAS parts. Currently, Justice Ash serves as the Presiding Justice of the Commercial Division.

In addition to her current judicial responsibilities, Justice Ash actively participates in numerous professional and civic organizations. She is a Board Director of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association, Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert and Judicial Friends. She is a Master in the Kings County American Inns of Court and an Executive Committee member of the New York State Bar Association Commercial & Federal Litigation Section. Justice Ash is an active member of the National Organization of Women Judges, the Brooklyn Bar Association and the Columbian Lawyers Association of Brooklyn.  She was recently appointed to the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct by Chief Judge Janet DiFiore.
