Justice Melvin L. Schweitzer received his bachelor’s degree with honors from New York University’s University College of Arts and Sciences in 1966, and his juris doctor in 1969 from Fordham University School of Law, where he was a Loyal League Philanthropies scholar and a member of the Fordham National Moot Court Team.
From 1969-2005, he was in private practice, focusing on corporate, securities, public finance and insurance law, thirty years with Rogers & Wells in New York City.
He served as a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (1993-99) where he was a member, and then Vice Chair, of the Audit Committee, and a member of the Finance and Operations Committees; a member of the Governor’s Advisory Panel on New York’s Financial Services Industry (1988-89); and Co-Chair of the New York City Comptroller’s Task Force on Pension Fund Obligations (1995). He is a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.
Appointed a Judge of the New York State Court of Claims in 2005, Justice Schweitzer was appointed an Acting Supreme Court Justice and assigned to the Commercial Division in December 2008. |
