Courts and courthouses across New York State have interesting, unique and valuable histories. We will be collecting these histories and sharing them as they become available. We begin this collection with a look at the Court of Claims.
The New York State Court of Claims is the exclusive forum for civil litigation seeking damages against the State of New York and certain other State-related entities. This excerpt from the New York State Library's publication The New York State Court Of Claims: Its History, Jurisdiction and Reports gives the history of the court from the first general statutory provision for claims against the State, the Erie Canal Act of 1817.
