The Court of Schout, Burgomasters and Schepens, 1660-1665; 1673-1674

In 1660, following petitions by the colonists, the offices of New Amsterdam schout and New Netherland Schout-fiscal were separated and the municipal tribunal became known as the Court of the Schout, Burgomasters and Schepens. The practice and procedure of the court remained the same as before and is outlined in the description of the earlier court.

The Court of Schout, Burgomasters and Schepens was a court of record, and complete minutes of the proceedings are available through the Internet Archive. These records clearly demonstrate the court's knowledge of the principles of jurisprudence.
