| NEW YORK - New York State Chief Administrative
Judge Jonathan Lippman issued the following statement today regarding legislation
to implement new filing fees in New York City Civil Court:
"I have received concrete representations from the respective chairs
of the Judiciary Committees of the Assembly and the Senate that legislation
providing for filing fees for motions and stipulations of settlement was
not intended to apply to the New York City Civil Court. These representations
are further supported by both the Assembly and the Senate, each having
passed a corrective bill that expressly states that these filing fees do
not apply in the Civil Court, although these bills could not become law
because they were not the same in other respects. Based upon these representations,
and after consultation with State Comptroller Alan Hevesi, I have directed
that the New York City Civil Court not collect the filing fees for motions
and stipulations of settlement until October 1, 2003, which will give the
Legislature time to address this matter." |
