Appointments Made To Appellate Term,
9th and 10th Districts

NEW YORK—Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman today designated Hon. Joseph Covello and Hon. Melvyn Tanenbaum as Associate Justices of the Appellate Term of the Supreme Court, Ninth and Tenth Judicial Districts. The appointments were made after consultation with Hon. A. Gail Prudenti, Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division, Second Department, and will take effect immediately.

Justices Tanenbaum and Covello fill vacancies arising from the appointments earlier this year to the Appellate Division, Second Department, of Hon. Robert Lifson and Hon. Peter Skelos, respectively.

Justice Covello began his tenure as a jurist in 1995 on the Nassau County District Court and was later elected to the State Supreme Court in 1999. He is a graduate of Hofstra University School of Law.

Judge Tanenbaum has been a Justice of the State Supreme Court since 1983, after presiding over County Court for nearly a decade. He graduated from New York Law School and has also completed a graduate program for appellate judges at the University of Virginia Law School.

The Appellate Term of the Supreme Court for the Ninth and Tenth Districts has appellate jurisdiction over cases originating in District Courts, City Courts, and local town and village courts. The Ninth and Tenth Judicial Districts encompass Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, Rockland, Putnam, Nassau, Suffolk Counties.
