Gary D. Spivey has presided over the New York State Law Reporting Bureau since his appointment as the 25th State Reporter on March 1, 1999. Mr. Spivey has been employed in the legal publishing industry for more than 35 years in a variety of editorial
and executive management roles. He started his legal publishing career in 1970
as a legal editor with the Lawyers Co-operative Publishing Company (LCP)
in Rochester, N.Y. and rose through the ranks to
become Editor-in-Chief of the organization. In 1988, he became a director of
LCP and the first President and CEO of LCP's electronic publishing subsidiary, Veralex
Inc., which developed and distributed on-line, diskette and videodisc products. He came to the State Reporter position from the Shepard's Citations company in Colorado Springs,
Colorado, where he served as Vice President, Electronic Publishing and Development.
Mr. Spivey is a member of the New York and Federal bars and a member of the Board of Editors of the
New York State Bar Association Journal. He also is a Past President of the American Society of Writers on Legal Subjects. He is the author of numerous articles on a variety of legal subjects and has testified on a number of legal publishing industry issues before the U.S. Department of Justice, the Administrative Office of U.S. Courts, and the American Bar Association.
A native of Indiana, Mr. Spivey is a graduate of Indiana
University and its School of Law, where he served as Managing Editor of the
Indiana Law Journal. He is an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a past President of the
Southeast Asia Army Security Agency Veterans Association. He is a
past President of the West Irondequoit, New York Board of Education and a former
chair of the St. Margaret Mary Parish Council in Irondequoit. He and his wife,
Miriam, a former special education teacher, are parents of three adult
sons.
