Justice Helen E. Freedman 


 

A graduate of Smith College and the New York University School of Law, Justice Freedman  was elected to the Civil Court of the City of New  York in 1978, appointed Acting Supreme Court Justice in 1984, and elected to the Supreme Court in 1988. She served in the Medical Malpractice Part, as a Trial Assignment Part Justice, and in the Appellate Term. Justice Freedman was appointed to the Commercial Division in September 1999. In addition to her duties in the Division, Justice Freedman manages all of the New York City personal injury asbestos cases, and all of the New York State breast implant, Fen-phen, and latex glove litigation. She teaches Mass Torts at New York Law School. Justice Freedman is the author of, among other things, the text New York Objections. She serves on the Pattern Jury Instructions Committee of the Association of Supreme Court Justices and is a member of the New York State and Federal Judicial Council.
