Passports
The County Clerk operates a Passport Office, located in Room 160, 60 Centre Street (hours: 9 A.M. to 2 P.M.). To obtain a passport for the first time, the applicant must furnish the following:
- a birth certificate with raised seal, or certificate of naturalization
- two passport photos
- a check or money order for $ 55.00 payable to Passport Services
- $ 30.00 cash, and another piece of photo ID (driver's license or work ID).
For a child under 16 years of age, the fee is $ 40.00 in check or money order, plus $ 30.00 cash. Children age 13 to 16 must appear in person and be accompanied by their mother or father. Children under the age of 12 do not have to come to the Passport Office; a parent may submit an application on behalf of children under 12.
To receive a passport on an expedited basis (that is, within two weeks), you must call 212-206-3500, listen to the entire recorded message, and make an appointment. On the date of your appointment, you must go in person to 376 Hudson Street. You must have all the documentation described above, plus your airline tickets. There is also an additional fee of $ 60.00 for expedited service. Thus, the total fee for an expedited passport for adults is $ 115.00 by check or money order payable to Passport Services, plus $ 30.00 in cash; for children under 16, the total fee is $ 100.00 by check or money order, plus $ 30 in cash. The hours of operation at 376 Hudson Street are 7:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M., Monday to Friday.
A person over the age of 18 may renew a passport by following the above procedure or by completing and mailing Form DSP-82, the "red and white application," which is available in the courthouse or any other passport acceptance facility. In order to be able to use this form, the applicant must be able to submit his/her most recent passport, have been at least 16 when that passport was issued, have received that passport less than 12 years ago, and use the same name or be able to document a formal change of name.
