Problem-Solving Courts
Problem-Solving Courts examine the underlying issues that bring litigants into the justice system (like drug addiction, domestic violence, mental illness) and look for more effective ways to assure offender accountability, enhance community safety and improve case outcomes, including several focused on youth.
Youthful Offender Domestic Violence Courts, in designated locations, handle only domestic violence cases involving defendants aged 16-19.
Drug Treatment Courts are available throughout the state to allow non-violent addicted offenders to enter these court-supervised treatment programs voluntarily as an alternative to a jail sentence. Among these courts are 18 focused on juveniles.
The Center for Court Innovation is a not-for-profit think tank that helps create projects that test new ideas for the New York State courts. Its website describes several Juvenile Justice programs: Bronx Juvenile Accountability Court, Harlem Youth Justice Center, Juvenile Intervention Court, Red Hook Youth Court, Youth Domestic Violence Court, and Youth Justice Board.
