Law Day 2008

One day every year is set aside to acknowledge and celebrate the structure of our democracy.  In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower established May 1st as Law Day.  Each year, the American Bar Association sets a theme for Law Day; national, state, and local jurisdictions hold events around that theme.

Law Day 2008 will explore the meaning of the rule of law—the goal is to increase public understanding of the rule of law through discussion of its role in a free society. “Rule of law” is the principle that everyone in a society—even the leaders—must follow laws, and that in order for laws to be the foundation for a just and well-governed society, they must be public, understandable, and fair. In societies without the rule of law governments may rule using laws that are random or impulsive and not applied to all citizens.
