Teaching Assistant – New York Legal Education Opportunity (NYLEO) Program Paid summer position (mid-May 2019 through mid-July 2019)

The New York Legal Education Opportunity Program (NY LEO) is seeking to fill four summer Teaching Assistant positions and one Resident Assistant/Teaching Assistant position. The foregoing positions will begin in mid-May 2019 and end in mid-July 2019. NY LEO is scheduled to run from Sunday, June 3, through Friday, July 12, 2019. The New York State Judicial Institute will host the program on the campus of the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University, which is located in White Plains, NY. Each Teaching Assistant will receive a stipend. The Resident Assistant/Teaching Assistant will reside on-site at the Pace Law School dormitories beginning on June 3, 2019, through the completion of the program, and will also receive a stipend.

The NY LEO Program:
Sponsored by the New York State Unified Court System, the NY LEO program enrolls up to 25 students (NY LEO Fellows) for a six-week law school preparation program. The program is designed to help ensure a diverse legal community by promoting academic success for individuals from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the legal profession. The Fellows take four academic courses including lawyering process (legal research/analysis/writing). Doctrinal courses meet twice a week. Academic courses including Lawyering Process meet three times a week unless other activities are planned. In addition, the Fellows attend academic skills sessions and participate in academic study groups for each of the classes. The program also includes field trips to courts and law offices subject to the availability of funds, as well as periodic lectures and events.

NY LEO Program Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:
Each Teaching Assistant is responsible for leading academic study groups under the supervision of faculty. The study groups are designed to supplement the students’ classes, provide review of substantive legal issues, and impart study skills and techniques. To prepare for the study groups, Teaching Assistants will coordinate with relevant faculty member(s). Teaching Assistants must attend assigned classes regularly to remain current with faculty members’ materials and teaching styles. Demonstrated excellence in first year law school subjects including legal writing and research is preferred, as well as enthusiasm for mentoring others, and for the legal profession and law school. 1Ls (rising 2Ls) and 2Ls (rising 3Ls) are encouraged to apply.
