Hon. Richard Molea

The Honorable Richard A. Molea was appointed to the Court of Claims and designated an Acting State Supreme Court Justice in January, 2000. In 2005, he was named the Supervising Judge of the Supreme and County Court Criminal Parts in the Ninth Judicial District which covers Westchester, Rockland, Dutchess, Orange and Putnam Counties.

Judge Molea has served as both a civil and criminal trial judge in the Supreme Court. In Westchester, he sits in the Trial Assignment Part, as well as in a substance abuse treatment court. He was the first presiding judge in the Westchester Mental Health Court. Judge Molea serves on the Office of Court Administration Committee on Criminal Jury Instructions and is a lecturer at the N.Y.S. Judicial Training Institute.

Judge Molea is a former Executive Assistant District Attorney in the Westchester County District Attorney's office, where he also supervised the prosecution of cases in the Grand Jury and Local Criminal Courts Division. He was a member of that office for over thirty years.

He graduated from New York Law School in 1969 with a Juris Doctor degree and Iona College in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Judge Molea has been an adjunct Assistant Professor in the Criminal Justice Department of Iona College since 1982, where he teaches courses in criminal procedure, criminal law and presentation of evidence. He is a frequent lecturer before judicial groups and bar associations.

Judge Molea is a past president of the New Rochelle Bar Association and a member of the Columbian Lawyers and Westchester Bar Associations. He is a founding member and on the advisory board of the New Rochelle Youth Court and Westchester Pre-trial Services, Inc. He is a past president of the New Rochelle Jaycees and New Rochelle United Way.
