Apply to Volunteer as a Part 137 Arbitrator

Both non-lawyer members of the public and lawyers may apply to volunteer as arbitrators for the Part 137 Program after completing a minimum of six hours of fee dispute arbitration training approved by the Board of Governors. The ADR Office sponsors remote trainings generally once per year. If a training is scheduled, information will be posted on the ADR Office’s Find a Training Page. If you miss the live training, you may be eligible to watch a recording of the full training at no cost. Email feedispute@nycourts.gov for more information.

Previous Arbitration Training & Experience

The board may consider previous arbitration training and experience when determining whether the training requirement has been met. If the board determines an applicant has met the training requirement, you will be asked to complete a short orientation to the Program. Eligibility under these circumstances is at the discretion of the board in consultation with the local program. Arbitrators may be required to undergo periodic refresher courses. (Standards and Guidelines Section 10)
If you have previous arbitration training, you may qualify to apply to a roster by:

  1. Viewing the orientation to the program
    1. Video (length 1:27:19) | Transcript
    2. PowerPoint
    3. Handout/Notes
  2. Writing down the viewer code* when you see/hear it, and;
  3. Contacting a local program to confirm you watched the video by presenting the code and submitting your bio or resume for board consideration.

* This is a viewer code, not a CLE code. This material does not qualify for CLE credit. However, attorneys who attend a complete six-hour Part 137 arbitration training are entitled to 6 Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Credits. Pursuant to CLE Rules of New York State, attorney-arbitrators may not receive CLE credit for arbitrating cases.
