Started in an outpatient program and did well for six months. Found a job, but continued hanging out with the wrong crowd. Got rearrested, but was given another chance to finish in a residential program. Grateful for the opportunity to “be a productive member of society as well as a role model to others” without having a criminal record.

Started in an outpatient program but “messed that up within two weeks.” Mandated to residential program. First time away from home and scared. At first, didn’t participate but then motivated by caring counselor. Stayed away from drugs and went back to school. 13 months later, mandate complete and almost finished with college.

Harry (60 Year Old Male):

Started abusing drugs and alcohol in Vietnam. Has lived in “chaos” for last 40 years. BTC has turned life around. Has become reacquainted with daughters and relatives. “It’s a beautiful thing.”

BTC was a way to escape. Had no relationship with mother or siblings. Went to a program upstate. Took all the specialized seminars and classes (anger management...domestic violence...relapse prevention). Has reestablished relationship with family and hopes to become a substance abuse counselor.

Israel (31 Year Old Male):

Was “functioning addict.” Worked, had money, fed kids, “took care of business.” Got arrested and spent ten months in treatment. Hard to be away from family, but it was worth it in the long run. “It’s your life your talking about.”

Jose (22 Year Old Male):

Diabetic. Addicted to marijuana. Dropped out of college. Got arrested and agreed to participate in BTC but continued smoking everyday. Stopped going to court and treatment. Got rearrested and spent a week in jail. Mandated to a residential program. Was very sneaky and broke rules. Paid the consequences and learned from them.

William (Young Male):

Mandated to an outpatient program for marijuana abuse. Took two months to get clean. Went to the library and got a library card. Went to a GED program and got a GED with “really high scores.” Enrolled in college and wants to be a teacher. “BTC was a cool thing.”
