Congratulations to FHW Legal Fellow Kimberley Bernard, Esq.!
In January, FHW Albany Legal Fellow, Kimberley Bernard, Esq., was admitted to the New York State Bar. A 2024 cum laude graduate of Albany Law School, she brings a strong academic background and a deep commitment to justice and equity. Kimberley completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Albany, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English.
A native of Westbury, NY, Kimberley was raised by her Haitian immigrant parents, and she takes immense pride in her Haitian-American heritage. She is deeply passionate about raising awareness of Haiti's history, its ongoing challenges, and, most importantly, its vibrant culture and richness.
Kimberley's scholarly work reflects her dedication to exploring complex historical and legal issues. Her paper, "The Parsley Massacre and its Impact on Haitian-Dominican Relations," which was written for Professor Vincent M. Bonventre's International Law of War and Crime Seminar, was recently published by International Law Studies. This paper offers a comprehensive analysis of the Parsley Massacre, a brutal and pivotal episode in the history of Haitian-Dominican relations. Beginning with an exploration of the historical context, economic disparities, and the factors leading to tension between the two nations, Kimberley's study delves into the rise of Rafael Trujillo and the anti-Haitian sentiments propagated by his regime. It provides a detailed examination of the methods employed by Trujillo's government and the international community's response, ultimately contributing to a nuanced understanding of the massacre and its ongoing implications for the interconnected histories of Haiti and the Dominical Republic.
Through her legal expertise, cultural advocacy, and scholarly contributions, Kimberley Bernard continues to champion greater awareness and understanding of issues affecting Haiti and the broader Caribbean community.
