A judge inquires about whether he/she may serve on the Board of a not-for-profit charitable organization.

This Committee previously has concluded that a judge may serve on the board of a not-for-profit charitable organization, so long as doing so does not conflict with the judge’s judicial duties; the organization will not regularly be engaged in adversarial proceedings before any court (or in proceedings that would regularly come before the judge); and, the judge avoids involvement in any fund-raising on behalf of the organization.          Thus, subject to these same restrictions, a judge may serve on the board of a not-for-profit charitable organization.
