Opinion 07-199

January 14, 2008

This responds to your inquiry (07-199) about whether you may be a member of a college’s School of Criminal Justice Advisory Board. You state that the Board advises the Dean and other college officials on issues about academic standards and proposed changes in the school’s Criminal Justice Department’s programs and curriculum.

The Committee previously concluded that a full-time judge may serve as a non-legal advisor to a non-profit civic organization, such as an educational institution, provided that the organization is not likely to be engaged in proceedings that would ordinarily come before the judge or in adversary proceedings in any court. Opinion 02-63.
