Opinion 09-199

November 10, 2009

Hon.

Dear Judge:

This responds to your inquiry (09-199) asking whether you may participate as a sponsor of the club to which you belong by purchasing an ad on a placemat stating “Best Wishes” and denoting your name and judicial title. The placemat, which includes the names of other sponsors - most of which are local businesses owned or operated by club members - and a request to support those sponsors, will be displayed at club meetings, dinners and fund raising events.

There is no ethical prohibition under the Rules Governing Judicial Conduct against purchasing such an ad. Enclosed, for your convenience, is Opinion 05-112, which relates to this issue.

Very truly yours,

                                                 George D. Marlow

Justice of the Supreme Court (Ret.)
