Opinion 91-92

September 12, 1991

Digest:         A judge may be honored by a United Way affiliated organization at a non-fundraising dinner.

Rules:          22 NYCRR 100.5(b)

Opinion:

A judge inquires whether the judge may accept an award in recognition of past work in the area of domestic violence at a non-fundraising dinner of a group affiliated with the local United Way.

Section 100.5(b) permits judges to participate in civic and charitable activities, but proscribes a judge from being a speaker or guest of honor at an event that is fundraising. As no fundraising is involved in the event in question, the judge may be honored at the dinner.
