Digest:  A part-time judge may serve on the Board of Directors of an abstract company.

Rule:  22 NYCRR 100.6(B)(4).

Opinion:

A newly elected part-time judge, who practices law, has been invited to be on the Board of Directors of an abstract company with which the judge does business and in which the judge is a shareholder. The judge seeks the opinion of the Committee as to the propriety of such service.

The Committee perceives no ethical impediment to the judge serving as a director of the abstract company. Based on the facts presented, that position does not appear to be incompatible with judicial office or likely to conflict with or interfere with the proper performance of the judge's judicial duties. 22 NYCRR 100.6(B)(4).
