Opinion 14-54

May 6, 2014

PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL

Dear :

This responds to your inquiry (14-54) asking whether it is ethically permissible for you to be the honoree at your law school’s Alumni Association Golf Outing. The purpose of the event is to raise money for the law school’s scholarship fund which is named after a deceased judge and alumnus of the law school.

The Committee has previously advised that a judge may attend and be honored at a law school alumni association’s fund-raising event, but the judge may not participate in soliciting funds or engage in other fund-raising activities (see 22 NYCRR 100.4[C][3][b][i], [iv]).

Enclosed, for your convenience, is Opinion 07-94 which addresses this issue.

                                       Very truly yours,

George D. Marlow, Assoc. Justice

Appellate Division, First Dept. (Ret.)
