Hon. Albert Rosenblatt Newly Appointed Chair of New York State/Federal Judicial Council

NEW YORK - Hon. Albert M. Rosenblatt, Associate Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals, was named the Chair of the New York State/Federal Judicial Council. He replaces United States District Judge George B. Daniels, of the Southern District of New York, whose term as Chair recently expired.

The State-Federal Judicial Council is a group of 10 distinguished state and federal judges, five appointed by the Chief Judge of the State of New York, five by the Chief Judge of the Second Circuit. The purpose of the council is to promote contact and collaboration between state and federal judges and practitioners, and to produce an agenda for intersystem cohesion. Programs sponsored by the Council have focused on similarities and differences in how the respective court systems handle specific questions, such as habeas corpus issues, jury selection, use of expert testimony and post-conviction review.

Albert M. Rosenblatt was born in New York City in 1936. A graduate of Harvard Law School and the University of Pennsylvania, he began his career on the bench in 1976 as a County Court Judge in Dutchess County. Subsequently, in 1981 he was elected to the State Supreme Court and later served as New York State’s Chief Administrative Judge until 1989, when he was appointed as an Associate Justice on the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, Second Department. In 1998, Governor George E. Pataki nominated him to be an Associate Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals, where Judge Rosenblatt sits currently. Prior to his judicial tenure, Judge Rosenblatt was the District Attorney in Dutchess County.

Judge Rosenblatt is President of the Historical Society of the Courts of the State of New York and Co-Chair (with Rex Smith, Editor of the Times Union) of the New York Fair Trial Free Press Conference. Author of numerous articles that have appeared in law journals and professional publications, he was a former editor of the Baker Street Journal and is a member of the Baker Street Irregulars. Judge Rosenblatt is a certified professional ski instructor and a nationally ranked squash player. He is married to Dr. Julia (Carlson) Rosenblatt, a writer and former Vassar College professor. They have one daughter and live in LaGrange, New York.
