The Kings County Supreme Court Library staff can provide directional, bibliographic, reference , and research assistance. However, the staff may not select a form; explain civil or criminal procedure; interpret statutes, cases, or court rules; give assistance in preparing the documents necessary to either prosecute or defend a legal proceeding; or any other services properly obtained either from the Kings County Supreme Court Help Center or from private legal counsel. The staff of the library is prohibited from rendering any legal advice, legal opinion, or interpretation of the law. Every researcher must make their own determination as to the use of the information found, preferably in consultation with a qualified attorney.
Circulation & Reserve Policies
The Kings County Supreme Court Library is not a lending library. Whether on reference or on reserve, all items are for the exclusive use of patrons within the Library. To examine a reserve item, a patron must turn over a valid form of government ID, which will be held by the Library until the item is returned, no later than five minutes before closing time.
Code of Conduct
- Library patrons must conduct themselves at all times in a manner which does not hinder fellow patrons or staff members from performing their work.
- Quiet must be maintained in all reading areas. Patrons who wish to converse or talk on the phone must so outside the Library.
- Smoking of all kinds and of all substances, including vaping and e-cigarette use, is strictly prohibited in the Library, as in the rest of the courthouse.
- No food or drink—including water—is allowed in the Library.
- Cellular phones are not to be used anywhere in the Library.
- Walkways and aisles must always be kept clear. They cannot be obstructed by books, large packages, or personal effects.
- Portable computers may be used in the Library.
- Patrons should not re-shelve any items after use, but rather leave them on a desk or book truck for the Library staff to reshelve.
- Patrons must allow Library staff and other patrons to access Library materials and equipment.
- Sleeping is prohibited in the Library.
- Children must be strictly supervised by their parent/s or guardian/s while in the Library; groups including a noisy or disruptive child will be asked to leave the Library.
- Posting or distributing any printed materials in the Library is prohibited.
- Soliciting, begging for money, or attempting to sell any items within the Library is prohibited.
- Suspicious, disruptive, intimidating, or illegal behavior will be reported to Courthouse Security.
- Anyone who fails to observe one or more of these rules may be excluded from the Library.
