Associate Justice Lizbeth González

Justice González was appointed to the Appellate Division, First Department, by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo in November 2019. She previously served in a dual capacity as an Associate Justice of the Appellate Term, First Department, appointed effective July 2016, and as a Supreme Court Justice, elected in Bronx County effective January 2016. Prior to this, Justice González respectively served as an Acting Supreme Court Justice, a Family Court Judge, a Civil Court Judge, and a Housing Court Judge. Before becoming a judge, she respectively served as an Assistant Attorney General for the NYS Department of Law; Assistant Corporation Counsel for the NYC Law Department; Director of Legal Services for the American Indian Law Alliance; Senior Attorney for MFY Legal Services; and Visiting Fellow at the Puerto Rican Legal Defense & Education Fund. She received her J.D. from New York University School of Law and her B.A. in Anthropology from Stony Brook University. Justice González is a past president of the Latino Judges Association and the Network of Bar Leaders. She currently co-chairs the ICWA (Indian Child Welfare Act) Committee of the New York Federal-State-Tribal Courts and Indian Nations Justice Forum. Justice González was recently appointed to the Board of the Stony Brook University Alumni Association. She is currently a Visiting Scholar at Stony Brook University, where she is studying the Indigenous languages of Long Island.
