Overview

New York State's Domestic Violence Courts (DV) are specialized courts that address criminal offenses involving intimate partners. Our DV courts have a dedicated judge and court staff trained on issues that uniquely impact domestic violence cases. DV Courts provide resource coordination, on-site victim advocacy, judicial supervision to enhance offender accountability, and collaboration with technical assistance teams.

An Integrated Domestic Violence Court (IDV) uses a “one family-one judge” model to bring criminal, family, and matrimonial proceedings involving the same parties before a single judge so the parties can go to one court for multiple cases. This model promotes consistency for those impacted by domestic violence.

Both courts have been developed as part of the justice system’s coordinated response to domestic violence and are dedicated to enhancing victim safety and holding offenders accountable. DV & IDV courts connect victims to needed services, ensure intensive court monitoring of abusers, and promote increased coordination between the court, community partners and victim services providers.
