History and Former Members
The Chief Administrator of the Courts, in consultation with the Administrative Board of the Courts and with the approval of the Chief Judge, appoints members to the Advisory Committee "in such numbers as deemed necessary to effectively carry out its duties" (22 NYCRR 101.2[a]). Each member must be "an active or former judge or justice of the Unified Court System" (22 NYCRR 101.2[b]). As of October 2016, the Chief Administrator designates two Co-Chairs (see 22 NYCRR 101.2[a]), who may serve renewable five-year terms without limitation, while other members may serve two terms of five years each (see 22 NYCRR 101.2[c]).
The Committee's first meeting to decide inquiries took place on November 8, 1987, with Hon. Samuel J. Silverman presiding as Chair. At that time, the Committee's letterhead reflected 18 voting members.
