Obtaining Certified Copies of Divorce Judgments
Pursuant to section 235 of the Domestic Relations Law, documents filed in a Matrimonial case are restricted. However, the listed parties and/or their attorneys of record have access to all documents filed.
Listed Parties
Request by Listed Parties must include the following:
- An original notarized letter of request that includes the first and last name of the parties at the time the divorce was filed, an index number or approximate year the divorce began. The letter of request should also include a contact phone number and/or email address.
- A certified check, money order or official bank check in U.S. dollars payable to the New York County Clerk in the amount of $8.00 per copy. The New York County Clerk’s Office does not accept personal or company checks.
- A copy of a non-expired, government issued photo I.D. (e.g., State or City ID, Driver’s license, passport)
- A certificate of non-appeal can be added to your request. The fee for each certificate is $5.00.
- Only certified documents can be requested by mail.
Attorney of Record
Request by an Attorney of Record must include the following:
- A letter of request that includes the first and last name of the parties at the time the divorce was filed, an index number or approximate year the divorce began. The letter of request should also include a contact phone number and/ or email address.
- A certified check, money order or official bank check in U.S. dollars payable to the New York County Clerk in the amount of $8.00 per copy. The New York County Clerk’s Office does not accept personal or company checks.
- A certificate of non-appeal can be added to your request. The fee for each certificate is $5.00.
- Only certified documents can be requested by mail.
Non-Parties
Request by Non-Parties must include the following:
- An original notarized letter of request from a party that grants access to the record. The letter of request must have the first and last name of the bearer. The letter of request should also include the first and last name of the parties at the time the divorce was filed, an index number or approximate year the divorce began, a contact phone number and/ or email address.
- A certified check, money order or official bank check in U.S. dollars payable to the New York County Clerk in the amount of $8.00 per copy. The New York County Clerk’s Office does not accept personal or company checks.
- A copy of a non–expired, government issued photo I.D. (e.g., State or City ID, Driver’s license, passport) from the party granting you access to their documents.
- A certificate of non-appeal can be added to your request. The fee for each certificate is $5.00.
- Only certified documents can be requested by mail.
Obtaining Certified Copies of a Name Change
Request must include the following:
- An original notarized letter of request that includes the former first and last name of the party, an index number or approximate year the matter began. The letter of request should also include a return mailing address, contact phone number and/ or email address.
- A certified check, money order or official bank check in U.S. dollars payable to the New York County Clerk in the amount of $8.00 per copy. The New York County Clerk’s Office does not accept personal or company checks.
- A copy of a non–expired, government issued photo I.D. (e.g., State or City ID, Driver’s license, passport)
- Only certified documents can be requested by mail.
Obtaining Certified Copies of a Court Case
Request for certified documents must include the following:
- An original letter of request that includes the company and/or first and last name of the parties, an index number or approximate year the matter began, and the title and approximate date of the document requested. The letter of request should also include a return mailing address, contact phone number and/or email address.
- A certified check, money order or official bank check in U.S. dollars payable to the New York County Clerk in the amount of $8.00 per copy. The New York County Clerk’s Office does not accept personal or company checks.
International Requests
Requests for certified documents being made from outside of the United States of America, must include the following:
- An original notarized letter of request from the party that includes the first and last name of the parties at the time the divorce was filed, an index number or approximate year the divorce began. The letter of request should also include a contact phone number and/ or email address.
- A bank check drawn on U.S. dollars in the minimum amount of $16.00 payable to the New York County Clerk. You will receive two certified copies of the divorce judgment. Please be advised, international money orders and company checks are not accepted.
- A copy of a non–expired, government issued photo I.D. (e.g., State or City ID, Driver’s license, passport)
- A certificate of non-appeal can be added to your request. The fee for each certificate is $5.00.
