As of January 1, 1996, there are no longer any exemptions from Jury Duty.

Pursuant to Section 500 of the Judiciary Law

“It is the policy of this state that all litigants in the courts of this state entitled to trial by jury shall have the right to grand and petit juries selected at random from a fair cross-section of the community in the country or other governmental subdivision wherein the court convenes; and that all eligible citizens have the opportunity to serve on grand and petit juries in the courts of this state, and shall have an obligation to serve when summoned for that purpose, unless excused.”

 

Every qualified citizen is required to serve jury duty unless excused.

Juror Qualifications in Bronx County

You are eligible to serve as a juror in Bronx County if you are:

  1. A United States Citizen,

  2. At least 18 years old,

  3. A resident of Bronx County,

In addition, jurors must:

  1. Be able to understand and communicate in the English language, and

  2. Have not been convicted of a felony

Postponements & Excusals

All applications for postponements must be submitted prior to the date of jury service. If the summons indicates that you have had a prior postponement, or that you were absent the last time you were summoned, it is important that you report for jury service on the date the summons indicates.

 

If you have had no prior postponements, and would like to automatically file for your first entitled postponement now, you can apply via:

Absence or Emergency

If illness or emergency prevents you from reporting as per your summons, please call us at 718-618-3360 after 8:30 am on the day you are to report.

If you are currently serving as a juror in Bronx County and you are unable to attend today, please call the location where you are serving. The location and phone numbers are as follows:

Subpoenas, Noncompliance, and Personal Appearance Required Notices

If you have received any of the letters listed below, please appear in person at the time and place stated in the letter or notice. If you are physically unable to appear or have any questions, please call the Jury Office at (718) 618-3360.

  • A Juror Subpoena, Failure to Respond Notice
  • A Judicial Court Hearing Subpoena
  • Noncompliance Notice
  • A Summons returned and stamped “Personal Appearance Required"

Payment for Jury Service

Note: As of June 9, 2025, the jury fee has increased from $40 per day to $72 per day.

The jury fee is $72 per day. If service extends beyond 30 days, the court may authorize an additional $6 per day per juror. 

The fee is paid by the State or your employer depending on: 

  1. The day(s) of service, and
  2. The size of employer.

Checks for jury service will be mailed by the State approximately four to six weeks after completion of your service.
