As of January 1, 1996, there are no longer any exemptions from Jury Duty.

Pursuant to Section 500 of the Judiciary Law

“It is the policy of this state that all litigants in the courts of this state entitled to trial by jury shall have the right to grand and petit juries selected at random from a fair cross-section of the community in the country or other governmental subdivision wherein the court convenes; and that all eligible citizens have the opportunity to serve on grand and petit juries in the courts of this state, and shall have an obligation to serve when summoned for that purpose, unless excused.”

Every qualified citizen is required to serve jury duty unless excused.

Juror Qualifications in Bronx County

You are eligible to serve as a juror in Bronx County if you are:

A United States Citizen,
At least 18 years old,
A resident of Bronx County,

In addition, jurors must:

Be able to understand and communicate in the English language, and
Have not been convicted of a felony

If you do not meet all 5 of these qualifications, you are not qualified to serve as a juror in Bronx County. See the below sections for more details about disqualifications. If you have any questions, please email us at: [email protected]

1. You are not a citizen of the United States

If you are not a United States citizen, please provide the jury office with the following:

One of the following proofs:
- A photocopy of your Alien Registration Card
- A photocopy of your Work Authorization Card
- A photocopy of your Visa
- A photocopy of your home country Passport
Your completed questionnaire or jury summons
Your 9-digit Juror Index Number

2. You are not at least 18 years old

If you are not at least 18 years old, please provide the jury office with the following:

One of the following proofs:
- A photocopy of your Passport
- A photocopy of your State ID
Your completed questionnaire or jury summons
Your 9-digit Juror Index Number

3. You are not a resident of Bronx County

If you are not a resident of Bronx County, please provide the jury office with the following:

Two forms of proof showing your new address from the accepted documents below:
- State (DMV) or Foreign ID
- Utility Bill showing your name and current address
- Copy of your most recent tax return with amounts deleted
- Voter Registration Card
- Signed lease, mortgage, or deed
Your completed questionnaire or jury summons
Your 9-digit Juror Index Number

4. You are unable to understand or communicate in the English language

If you are unable to understand and communicate in English, you must report as directed on your summons or subpoena. Further instructions will be given when you appear.

5. You have been convicted of a felony

If you have been convicted of a felony, please provide the jury office with the following:

Proof of your felony conviction
Your completed questionnaire or jury summons
Your 9-digit Juror Index Number

Note: If you do not have proof of your felony conviction:

If you were convicted in New York State: Please email us at [email protected] to advise that you do not have proof of your conviction.
If the felony conviction occurred outside of New York State, you must contact that jurisdiction for proof.

Note: If you have a Certificate of Good Conduct or Relief from Civil Disabilities, you are eligible to serve. Please provide the jury office with the following:

A photocopy of your Certificate of Good Conduct or Relief from Civil Disabilities
Your completed questionnaire or jury summons
Your 9-digit Juror Index Number

Postponements & Excusals

All applications for postponements must be submitted prior to the date of jury service. If the summons indicates that you have had a prior postponement, or that you were absent the last time you were summoned, it is important that you report for jury service on the date the summons indicates.

If you have had no prior postponements, and would like to automatically file for your first entitled postponement now, you can apply via:

You have served as a Juror in a New York State or Federal Court within the past 6 years

If you have served as a Juror in a New York State or Federal Court within the past 6 years, you are not required to serve again for 6 years after your completed service. You may request an excusal by providing the jury office with the following:

A copy of your Proof of Jury Service
Your completed questionnaire or jury summons
Your 9-digit Juror Index Number

You have a medical condition or disability

If you have a medical condition that prevents you from serving as a juror, you may request a postponement or excusal by providing the jury office with the following:

A statement from a licensed medical professional which includes the following:
- A diagnosis of your mental or physical condition.
- A prognosis of how long the condition is expected to exist.
- A conclusion stating that you are incapable of serving as a juror currently or in the future.
Your completed questionnaire or jury summons
Your 9-digit Juror Index Number

You are the caregiver of a child or an elderly person

If you are the main caregiver of your child, children under 14 years of age, or of an individual who requires constant attention, you may request a postponement by providing the jury office with the following:

A copy of the birth certificate of your youngest child, or a doctor's note stating the condition of the person being cared for and that you are the main caregiver of that person.
Your completed questionnaire or jury summons
Your 9-digit Juror Index Number

You are in the military

If you are an active member of the military, you may request a postponement by providing the jury office with the following:

A copy of the first page of your orders, deleting any sensitive information
Your completed questionnaire or jury summons

The juror is deceased

If the proposed juror is deceased, please provide the jury office with the following:

A copy of the decedent’s death certificate, obituary, or other official certification
The decedent’s completed questionnaire or jury summons

Absence or Emergency

If illness or emergency prevents you from reporting as per your summons, please call us at 718-618-3360 after 8:30 am on the day you are to report.

If you have received any of the letters listed below, please appear in person at the time and place stated in the letter or notice. If you are physically unable to appear or have any questions, please call the Jury Office at (718) 618-3360.

Payment for Jury Service

Note: As of June 9, 2025, the jury fee has increased from $40 per day to $72 per day.

The jury fee is $72 per day. If service extends beyond 30 days, the court may authorize an additional $6 per day per juror.

The fee is paid by the State or your employer depending on:

The day(s) of service, and
The size of employer.

Checks for jury service will be mailed by the State approximately four to six weeks after completion of your service.
