Notary Department

The Notary department processes public notarizations, notary authentications, and maintains an index of all Notaries Public and Commissioner of Deeds qualified in Bronx County.

Notary Services

The Bronx County Clerk’s Office has notaries on staff who can notarize documents free of charge. For our public notary services:

  • You must present a valid government issued photo ID (e.g. State Driver’s License, Passport)
  • Only documents written in the English language can be notarized
  • There is a 5-document limit per customer.
  • There is no fee charged for notarizing documents.

 

Pursuant to New York State Notary Law, a document that is being notarized requires the following:

  • A statement or document that is being acknowledged by the notary.
  • The venue – the State and County where a notary public takes an affidavit or acknowledgment. EX: “State of New York, County of Bronx:
  • The Jurat – a part of an affidavit where the notary public certifies that it was sworn to before the notary. EX: “Sworn to before me this .... day of ...., 20 ......

 

The individual getting the document notarized must be physically present before the notary. A document must be signed in the presence of the notary. It cannot be notarized if it was signed beforehand.

Please Note: Our Notary Department does not notarize wills, trusts, or deeds. These documents can be notarized at an outside notary.

Authentication of Documents

Authentications can be processed in person or through the mail. 

  • Original documents and signatures are required to authenticate a notary signature.
  • A $3.00 fee per Authentication is charged.
  • All fees are payable to the Bronx County Clerk via NYS attorney’s check, certified bank check, or money order. Cash and credit card payments are only accepted in person.
  • Please Note: The notary stamp must read "QUALIFIED IN BRONX COUNTY."

 

To Authenticate a notary signature via mail, please provide the following and mail to our Mailing Address:

  • The original, signed document(s) you want authenticated
  • A written request that includes your email address, phone number, and return address.
  • A self-addressed stamped envelope
  • A Money Order, Attorney’s Check, or Certified Bank Check for $3.00 fee per document.

Index of Notary Publics & Commissioner of Deeds

The Bronx County Clerk’s Office maintains an index of all Notary Publics and Commissioner of Deeds qualified in Bronx County.

The fees for filing with the Bronx County Clerk are as follows:

  • Issuing of Character Cards: $5.00
  • Filing of Character Cards: $10.00
  • Filing of Commissioner of Deeds signature card: $10.00
